Why do you need to care about Internet Security?

The internet is full of all sorts of malicious threats. People spend a lot of time doing things online. That is why it is important for us to be more knowledgeable about internet security. While surfing the internet, your computer faces many threats. We can use a many anti-spyware and antivirus software taht perform certain activities to eliminate malicious threats such as: Spyware, Keyloggers, Trojans, Hijackers, Worms, Rootkits, Tracking Threats, Password Stealers, and others.

Try not to download from shady websites, internet security programs can detect, quarantine, and remove threats from your computer. But, the best tool for eliminating adware, spyware and malware is still you!

Anti-Virus

Viruses are probably the oldest, and one of the most common ways in which a computer can be compromised. Having an anti-virus program is vital. It is surprising that computer operating systems don’t come with an antivirus already included.
What to do:
Luckily, many antivirus software is available for free. Among the best ones are Avast, Microsoft Security Essentials, Avira, Panda Cloud, and AVG.

Firewall

A firewall is used to prevent harmful traffic to your computer, while only allowing harmless traffic through and denying potentially harmful connections. Viruses on other computers may try to spread to your computer. A firewall acts as a barrier between your computer and other computers.
What to do:
Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 all come with a firewall. But, you can also get a good, free firewall from the internet. These firewalls offer more features, and control. These include AVS Firewall, Outpost Firewall Free, PrivateFirewall, Comodo, Online Armor Free, and, ZoneAlarm.

Wireless Network Security

Your home wireless is not very secure. Generally, if you are using a wireless network for your home, it is wide open for anyone to use. This allows potential hackers to steal your password and potentially cause all sorts of problems.
What to do:
First, you’ll need to password protect your network by setting-up a username and password. Usually this is done by setting a Wireless Equivalent Privacy (WEP) key on the router. Some routers come with 128 bit encryption (more is better). You can set the password by following the instructions on your router’s manual. You will need to enter the IP of the router (e.g. 192.168.1.0) in a web browser. Then you can set the new username and password. Then you can change the Service Set Identifier (SSID)(This is the name of your network, get creative). When all is set, just find search the network, find the SSID, write the password, and use your Internet.

Anti-Spyware

Spyware can spy on your computer and send this information to the hacker’s computer. It can be a key logger, or a worm. It could be adware. If not dealt with, spyware can cause all sorts of annoying problems.
What to do:
You can combat this by installing a free anti-spyware program such as Spybot – Search & Destroy, and Ad-Aware Free Antivirus+
